Small Change, Better World

Launches March 1, 2018

Overview

Recent studies have indicated that many millennials and post-millennials want to be involved in charity and philanthropy, but there aren’t many access points designed for young people—even though they have the necessary energy and passion. Students who have completed our online course on Global Poverty & Inequality, an immersive field study experience, or the Global Scholars Program are often inspired and enthusiastic about taking action, but lack the capital to tackle concrete, outcome-focused projects in their communities.

In thinking about these potential concrete projects, the Blum Center decided to create a new model for using student passion and capacity to make measurable gains along a set of trajectories. Most programming cannot undertake small changes – as it is not an efficient way to run an organization. However, students who have certain skills and interests may be able to identify small needs that may be ignored – filling this gap.

Small Change, Better World provides seed grants for a one-time, limited scope projects that address a specific need. Funded projects must require less than $3,000 and be achievable within a short period of time, such as a quarter or semester.

Small Change seed grants give students an opportunity to meet a tangible need in their own community or one wherein they’ve worked. We hope that this is one of the first in a series of actions that students take over their lifetime, sparking a strong commitment to social action.
